A little over 10 years ago I started making an animated short film to learn how to use Maya. I knew nothing about rigging, animating, shading or lighting but like everyone always says: ‘story is king’, so I set out to tell the story about a happy-snappy stapler who has its comeuppance. I was working an office job at the time, in charge of ordering stationery and got the idea from chasing a colleague with a broken stapler. To render the film we networked four old desktop computers into a small render farm which ran for about 4 months, give or take. To be able to render the film at all I restricted myself to two camera moves: one at the start and one at the end of the film. Fortunately the project was rendered at 2K (for a possible film print) so its been possible to remaster the film in HD. Sound was designed and recorded by the talented Chris Reading and the score was composed by the amazing Jamie Salisbury. About 3 years of work in total, the film premiered at the 10th Hollywood Film Festival in 2016. STATIONERY also played at the 14th Raindance Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and screened on HBO.
